Senior year in college is the time when you ask yourself these questions: What am I going to do after I graduate? Which career path will I take? Am I ready for the real world?
Well, just continue reading and you’ll know the answers to these questions.
Nicolai V. Reyes, a PR professional and the vice president of Mindbench Philippines said that in choosing your career you should take into consideration your passion, skills and the market. Thus, Career= Passion+Career+Market.
According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, passion is a “ strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something.” So from this, you can infer that your passion is what you love doing.
If I ask you what are you passionate about, you may answer me that you really love writing poems, articles, stories and novels. So take that into consideration when your choosing your career path. In this case, you may consider being a writer or journalist.
However, choosing your career doesn’t end with knowing your passion. You may love writing so much but what if you don’t have the skills to be a writer? What if you can’t even write grammatically correct sentences? You will have a problem there because writers should be able to communicate their thoughts effectively and be capable of editing or proofreading their own works. But let's assume that you have the skills of a writer, you should now think of the market.
Are the people willing to pay for what you love doing? As a writer, do you think your poems, articles or novels can give you the money you need to survive? If yes, then now you know the career path to take. If no, then you should start from the beginning and rethink of another thing that you are passionate about and compliments your skills. And if writing is your only passion, then you should enhance or work on the skills in line with it.
Identifying which career path to take is really crucial because it will dictate what you're going to be for the rest of your life. What you have to do is find the line that connects your passion, skills and the market to succeed in life. So, go and be successful!
